I wasn’t sure if I believed in this mekarry bond, but it sounded nice. I was enough of a romantic deep down to root for it. How amazing would it be if after all these years human women turned out to be the true soulmates of these aliens? How astonishing and fated!

Something was up with Xandros, though. It was as if I could almost physically feel how the air had shifted around us. I didn’t know how I knew this, but he was keeping a secret from me, a big one.

Worried about it being about Earth, I asked, “Will you tell me now what you haven’t been wanting me to know?”

He reached his hand up and massaged the back of his neck, looking for all intents and purposes like a teenager about to confess his love to his first crush; he didn’t even meet my eyes. He looked so unlike the hard military commander I was slowly getting to know, it worried me.

“Xandros?”

He looked up. His heated gaze met mine, and in a deep voice he rasped, “Say it again.”

“Say what?” I asked confused.

“My name,” he demanded more like him.

“Xandros,” I said a bit unsure about what was happening here.

He took in a deep inhale, closed his eyes as if savoring a fine wine. I stood quietly watching him, waiting.

When his eyes opened again, they were the deepest purple I had ever seen on him, like a deep abyss that was pulling me in, making me want to lose myself inside of them.

“About that mekarry bond,” he finally said in his deep voice. “I felt it too.”

“With whom?” I asked before I could stop myself, and a sudden jolt of jealousy bore through me. I’ll kill her. I’ll kill him. I’ll kill both of them, shot through my head before I could stop myself.

“You,” he simply said.

That stopped my breathing, my heart, and any movement of mine. I simply froze and stared at him.

“Me?” My lips and tongue seemed the only part of me that worked.

“You,” he assured me.

Thousands of questions ran through my head, but foremost on my mind was one word, Me! He wanted me!

I had no idea why this pleased me so immensely, I hardly knew this man. Yes, we had had great sex together, but he was talking about some soulmate stuff I didn’t quite understand yet.

“Don’t worry, this is just as new to me as it is to you,” Xandros said. “I’m not expecting you to reciprocate any of my feelings.” Yet, hung the unspoken word between us. “But I do need to know, do you feel anything for me too? Anything more than would be normal given our current situation?”

Slowly I nodded. “Yes, I do. I don’t know about this ‘the One’ or soulmate thing, but I do feel more for you than I should. Even from the moment I first saw you… I…” I didn’t want to tell him, didn’t want him to know, but it seemed important. “When you looked at that woman on the bed… I wanted to murder her.
